Kauai Grown Responsibilities?

5/11/2018

Hey everyone! This week’s blog topic is Kauai Grown. If you didn’t know our class is partnering up with the company Kauai Grown to run their social media accounts, take pictures, and make short personal profiles on the members of Kauai Grown. I am a part of the photography team and we go to farmer’s markets and businesses and take pictures. In my team I do not think that I am fulfilling all my responsibilities because I am not taking pictures as much as I can. So here is what I am going to fulfill my responsibilities in the photography team for Kauai Grown.

The first thing that I am going to do is try to go to some farmer’s market so the social media teams have pictures to post over the summer. Our class is running three social media accounts. They are on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Since I am creating or posting posts to these pages I am responsible for getting the content. The farmers markets that I am going to be taking pictures for are some of the Tuesday farmers markets. Along with all of Wednesday and Thursdays farmers markets. So I am going to try and get out to the farmers markets in the time that I have left in the school year.

The next thing that I am going to do is make more flyers. One of the types of posts that we upload onto the social media accounts is flyers. The photography team is responsible for creating them because we take the photos. These flyers inform the public about a farmers market and include picture from the farmer’s market. I enjoy creating these flyers so creating them is going to be a fun goal for me.

The final thing that I am going to do to fulfill my responsibilities is to help out more on the personal profiles. Another thing that we are doing in our groups is creating personal profiles which are like news stories. We still go through the same steps before we edit like T.I.A.S, 5 Ws, 5 points, and a script. My partners Ty and Mia are really good at the journalistic and video part and I feel like that I am not as good at it as them. So, I want to help out more and learn more.

So that is how I am going to fulfill my responsibilities in my Kauai Grown group. I am going to work hard to finish this year strong.

Life Lessons?

Hey everyone! This week’s blog topic is life lessons learned from media. So as you can imagine in media we not only learn how to film and edit we also learn valuable life lessons. So, here is 3 lessons that I have learned in media.

The first lesson that I learned is how to talk to people. When we call school or places we want to a news story on we have to be able to talk to lots of people that we don’t know. So, we have to be a good speaker. Also, for me I am in spot feature so for STN I have to go out and find ask strangers if we can do a news story. Since STN is at random places around the United States you never know who you’ll be talking to. I am a person who is more on the shy side learning how to talk to people has been very helpful.

The second lesson that I have learned from being in the advanced media class is how to manage my time. Since our class is a bit smaller this year we have to take on multiple task at one time. Sometimes finding time to complete them is a bit hard while trying to balance schoolwork and extracurricular activities. I have learned how to work on different projects and how to plan my work time. How I plan is I think of what I have work on at the beginning of the week.  Then I plan what projects I will be working on certain days according to deadlines. Then I execute my plan.

The third lesson that I have learned from being in the class is how to work with others. In our class for most of the year we are working in pairs. For example we work together on radios, news stories, and announcement scripts. I think it’s good to work in pairs because it is easier to split up the work. Sometimes we work in small groups too. Now that we have amped up Kauai grown again we are working in small groups to post on social media or to take pictures. I am in a group of three and even though it’s one more person than a pair it is different work wise.

So those are the life lesson that I have learned from being media. I am so grateful to be in this class because I am learning so much!

Family Night Videos

Hey everyone! This week’s blog topic is Family Night Videos! At the end of every school year we have a family night where we present our best videos of the year to our families. The video I am choosing to show is my STN edit for this year’s STN Trip. Here is why I want to show this video at family night.

The first reason why I want to show this video is because the new people coming into our class next year will be attending the family night. The new people entering the class will not know what STN is so I am hoping it gives them a little taste of what STN is. I have clips in my edit of the Boston, our adventures in Nashville, and the parts of STN. When I went to STN for the first time it was nothing like I expected. Showing a short recap of STN will kind of give an idea of what the trip is like.

Another reason why I want to show my edit at Family Night is to show that our class is like one big family. In my edit I have videos of us talking or just hanging out and laughing. I feel like I really bonded with my classmates and you can see it in the edit. We are really a family and I am really sad to see the eighth graders go so I want to honor them in a way in my edit. They have honestly taught me so much from writing scripts to editing videos. But I am also excited to get new students in the class next year.

The last reason why I want to show my edit at Family Night is because I had so much fun finding and editing the clips. I loved choosing the photos and videos and remembering all the memories we had on the trip. I also think that it’s going to bring back the good memories we had during the trip. I loved getting to find the different clips and editing it to music that I am using.

That is why I want to show my STN edit at Family Night. I can’t wait to show everyone the finished product.

STN Highlights

Hey everyone! Our media just came back from a 13 day long trip in Nashville, Tennessee and Boston, Massachusetts.  This media trip was so so amazing getting to learn so much about the places we went to and of course various media topics. Here are highlights of the 2018 STN trip.

My first highlight is winning first in the Crazy 8’s News Magazine competition. In this competition we are given 8 hours to shoot and edit together a news magazine which is kind of like news magazine. Our topic this year was rock this town. I felt I was given a big responsibility because I got to edit together the final product. On the News Magazine team there was Ty, Evan, Haley, Shayne, Halea, Natalie, Janine, and me. I felt like since we are all seventh graders we worked together really well. Along with editing the final product I got to make a short news story too. I was partners with ty and we did our story on a tileworks place. I know what you’re thinking, what does a tile place have to do with rocking the town. Well we figured since the tiles are like rocks the tiles literally rock the town. This year’s Crazy 8’s is an experience I will never forget.

My second highlight is getting to go on this trip with such amazing, hilarious, wonderful people. Not only are the people in this class great at media work they are funny and fun to be around. I remember so many times where I couldn’t stop laughing so hard. I feel like this year since the class is smaller it is easier to bond. I felt like I got to know each person over the 13 days. Getting to go somewhere totally different from Hawaii like Boston was cool because we got to experience so many different new things together. Everyone on the trip students and chaperones are so amazing.

My third and final highlight of the 2018 STN trip is getting to see snow. One night on the trip in Boston it started to snow very lightly and everyone ran out in the cold with just their pajamas on. That was only the tip of the iceberg. The following morning everyone was super excited to go and play in the freshly fallen snow. We had so much snowball fights as well as many, many snowmen. We were so siked we went out in the snow twice that day. Since we live in a more tropical area it was a fun, rare day I got to spend with my classmates

So those are my highlights of this year’s STN trip! I am so grateful for the trip and I can’t wait for next year’s STN!

Third Quarter Goals

1/20/2018

Hey everyone! Happy New Year! The first blog topic of the year is New Quarter, New Goals. We are now in the 3rd Quarter which means new goals. So, here are my new goals for this quarter.

The first goal of this new quarter that I have is to be better at coming up with five points and scripts. Since I am in spot feature for STN me and my partner for the competition, Mia has to be able to come up with a news story in a few hours and edit it in a few hours too. So there isn’t really much time to come up with a full script so we have to think off the top of our heads. This is also helpful when I have to some up with five points and a script for news story.

The second goal for the third quarter is to sound more natural when I am doing voice overs or radios. I feel that sometimes when I am recording my voice it sounds like I am reading off a script and it doesn’t sound very natural. In our Inside Scoops which are heard on FM 97, we have to sound like we are having a conversation. Sometimes when you have a lot of information for an event you can sometimes go really monotone. So, for anything voiceover related I want to make sure that I don’t sound too monotone.

My last goal for the third quarter is to be better at shooting b roll. In news stories b roll covers up interviews and it can show what the person is talking about. In some occasions b roll isn’t the easiest to film sometimes because of the things that the person that you are interviewing is saying. Since things move so fast in this world, it is hard to get a perfect shot that is well framed and it is in focus. This can also help me when I compete in spot feature and in the crazy 8’s new magazine.

So those are my goals for this third quarter! I am so excited for what this third quarter brings, Like PSAs and STN! Thank you for reading!

What am I thankful for?

11/23/2017

Hey everyone! With the holiday season come around the corner and Thanksgiving today, this week’s blog topic is what are you thankful for. I think that we have so many privileges that many kids around the world don’t have access to that we sometimes overlook as something we should be thankful for. So, here are three things I am thankful for.

The first thing that I am thankful for is family. Of course family because they have been there for you since the day you were born. My mom always takes me anywhere and will help me reach where I want to be. My Dad will help reach things academically. My Grandparents will always support me in whatever like in media or dance. They will always love me and I am grateful to have them in my life

The second I am thankful for is friends. I feel like next to family, friends is the best things that you can have. In this media productions class I feel like I have made special bonds with people in the class last year and this new school year. We all have helped each other grow in media and as people. We all are good friends and they always make me laugh non stop when I am around them and I am so thankful to have people like them in my life.

The last thing that I am thankful for is getting the opportunity to learn about media. I am so thankful that I get to be in the advanced media class and that I have an amazing media teacher like Mr. Matsunaga to help me learn. I am also thankful that I get the opportunity to get to turn my ideas into reality through film. For example PSAs are a time where I get to choose a specific idea that I think is a problem in our society that I have experience and try to bring awareness. Also I feel thankful that I get to learn about photography. I love looking at photos that are beautifully shot and I always wanted to learn how they got these certain shots. Now that I am in media I know how to get different shots and what shots I need depending on what my focus is.

So that is what i am thankful for! I hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! That is all for this week’s blog.

How Is The School Year Going?

11/13/2017

Hey everyone! This week’s blog topic is how is the year going. This year our class is smaller and we don’t have any six graders. We definitely have more work because there is less people. So here is my thoughts and how my school year is going so far.

First, is how I feel about this. I think that this is a bit of a challenge because we have more work than last year. There is more radios, more morning announcement scripts, and work.  Since there is less students that means shorter rotations with radios and announcements. Radios are a bit more of a challenge because sometimes when you finish a radio you already have to start looking into the next one and start gathering information. With announcements, we had three teams last year but now we have two. Now that we announce, in between we will only have a one week break in between working and announcing. But, it has helped me with time management.

This year has it’s better times and it’s worse times but, it is definitely not the same. Some of the better times is that we are closer because our class is smaller. We can text or call each other when we have questions. I feel like we have a tighter bond because there is less people. But there is. Some of the worst times are when we have lots of deadlines stacked on each other. We could have projects, radios, or an extra project due really close together and that’s what we call crunch time.

I think one way that we can make it better is to time manage better. Especially me because there are times I think, “Why couldn’t I have planned this out better?”. Making sure we all have time for the things we have to do and we are all on the same page and no one gets left behind. I feel like when someone is not in the know they miss out on a lot. So keeping everyone informed is something we can all do.

In conclusion, even though this year is different we all can be successful we can work hard at it. So that’s all for this week.

New Quarter, New Goals

10/22/2017

Hey everyone! Wow the first quarter has flown by. But since we are starting a new quarter that means new goals. But I chose in that I think I really need to work on, and that is morning announcements. There are sometimes mistakes on my end of it so I really need to work on getting better. So, here are 3 ways that I can make myself better.

The first thing I can do to become better is to try and get to school a little bit before 7:15. I think this will help because when everyone gets there at 7:15 and everybody is ready at that time to practice sometimes there are jobs such as titler that need more time to do stuff. So, when you come early and when everyone is here I'll be ready to practice whenever they are.

The second thing I can do to help myself get better at morning announcements is to      always read through the scripts the night before. Because when you announce you could mess up on many different things such as long announcements or complicated names. When you read it through the night before you'll have it a little memorized before you announce.

The third thing I can do to improve myself during morning announcements is to always focus on what I'm doing. During morning announcements it is easy to make mistakes and to avoid that you obviously need to pay attention. It could be listening and watching what I'm doing, I just need to get my head into the game.

That is my goal for second quarter and how I am going to reach it. That's all for this week.

Toughest Challenges

9/30/2017

Hey everyone! This week’s blog topic is toughest challenges this year. If you didn’t know our class has decreased this year in size so there is definitely a change in things we need to do.  So, here are some of the new challenges that this year brings.

For me this year the hardest thing is time management. Since we have a smaller class that means smaller teams and rotations. Which includes smaller morning announcement teams and shorter radio rotations. So that means very packed deadline weeks with multiple deadlines. But, this is a good life lesson. Time management will be very helpful in the future.

The work this year is definitely more for sure. Just like I said in the paragraph before there are weeks where there is a lot of work and deadlines to finish and meet. Inside scoops, morning announcements, quarterly projects, and other side projects are all things we need to work on with shorter deadlines. Partner work has helped a lot because I can split work with someone and we can nail it down quicker.

I am in a partner group with Keith and in my opinion it is easier. It is easier with communication and how we split up work. We know what we are going to do because we communicate and we can split up work and nail it down fast because we know what we are going to do. We can help each other with work because we are both returnees and sometimes he knows stuff I don’t know and I can help him with stuff he doesn’t know, so it works.

So that is all for this week. I know this is going to be a tough year but it will be a great learning experience. I am so excited for this year!

New Year, New Goals

9/5/2017

Hey everyone! We are starting the weekly blogs posts. This week’s blog topic is New Year, New Goals. I have learned so much throughout my first year in media and ready to expand my knowledge in media in this second year. So, here is my goals for this 2017-2018 school year.

My first goal is to get better with deadlines. Ah deadlines, feared deadlines. I must admit one of the scariest part of this media class is deadlines. Sometimes last year deadlines were missed, so that is why I want to work on them this year. My initial goal this year is to make all the deadlines or Turn things in before the deadlines to try and get rid of some of my stress.

My next goal is to become very observant when it comes to editing videos. Sometimes when you watch the the video your editing over and over again mistakes become less noticeable. If you edit you might know what I mean. Taking short breaks when editing might help or getting a second opinion too. But, when looking back at my video I want to look out for numerous types of mistakes like jump cuts, sound level differences, and the list goes on.

My last goal is to become better at communication with people. So this goal means I want to become better speaking to other people which could be for stories or inside scoops. Both of these require talking to many people and making your voice and what you want to get across clear. This is also a very important life skill.

So this is three of the many goals I have for this year. I am very excited for everything that will come my way this year. So that is all for this week, have a great day!
